To figure out how AppleUSBOHCI was using its PCI device nub, I used a mix of runtime logging, disassembly analysis, and source-code analysis of Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar’s IOUSBFamily sources (which are the first available from Apple). To my relief, communication with the PCI hardware via the PCI device nub was limited - the main thing AppleUSBOHCI needed from the PCI hardware was the base address of the USB host controller - something that it retrieved using PCI commands.
